Description

Autograph album of Emma I. Fiske measuring 8 x 3/4 inches. The album is dated 1868. It contains signatures from a number of individuals, such as her brother Louie T. Fiske, her grandmother Pamela (Brown) Fiske, her aunt Mary Elizabeth (Fiske) Fessenden, and various friends and acquaintances. The autographs within the book are not in chronological order. The vast majority of signatures are signed Lexington, Massachusetts, and East Lexington, Massachusetts, although locations in New Hampshire, Maine, and other towns in Massachussetts can be found. Entries in the journal often contain poems excerpts, quotes, and well wishes.

The cover has an embossed ornamental design surrounding a debossed and gilded ornamental design with the word ALBUM in the center. The edges of the pages are gilded. Apprxomimately every four pages, the colors of the pages within the book change, cycling between pastel yellow, pink, purple, and blue. Interspersed throughout the book are various engravings engraved and printed by the Illman Brothers. Three of the engravings found in the book were originally drawn or painted by artists Jules David, F. J. Shields, and Paul Delaroche.

Emma I. Fiske was born on April 18, 1848 in Lexington, Massachusetts, to James Francis Fiske (1825-1883) and his wife Lydia Hastings (Ingraham) Fiske (1829-1877). She had two siblings, Carrie F. Fiske (b. 1851) and Louie T. Fiske (b. 1853). She is a descendant of the Fiske family, who were among the early settlers of what was once called Cambridge Farms, Massachusetts, part of which is now called Lexington, Massachusetts. Emma died in 1938 at the age of 90.
