General Joab Nelson Patterson (1835-1923) was a New Hampshire-born teacher, soldier, and politician. Following his graduation from Dartmouth in 1860, Patterson briefly taught public school before enlisting in the Union Amry during the American Civil War. He was promoted to captain, lieutenant colonel, colonel, and finally brevet brigadier general after serving in key battles like Gettysburg and Fair Oaks. After the war, Patterson served in the New Hampshire legislature, as U.S. Marshal, and as Second Auditor of the U.S. Treasury. He rejoined the military during the Spanish-American War and later oversaw public buildings in Havana, continuing his career as a public servant and remaining active in veterans' and civic organizations. Patterson died in Concord at age 88, remembered as one of New Hampshire’s most distinguished citizen-soldiers.
