Historical/Biographical Note

Historical/Biographical Note

The American Colonization Society, originally known as the Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America, was founded in 1816 by Reverend Robert Finley (1772-1817). The Society's aim was to encourage and promote the migration of free people of color to colonize Africa, specifically what would become Libreria, under the belief that free people of color could not integrate into United States society.
