Description

Letter to postermaster general John McLean from Cornelius Turner of Wiscasset, Maine. Dated October 4, 1828. The letter discusses local mail delivery, with Turner proposing to "convey the mail on Post Route No. 550, from Brunswick; by Bath, Woolwich, Wiscasset, Newcastle, Sheepscotbridge, Damariscotta, Nobleboro, Jefferson, Waldoboro, Warren, Thomaston, East Thomaston, Camden, Lincolnville, and Northport; to Belfast six times a week, in a four wheel coach, of sufficient size to accomodate seven passengers & drawn by four horses." A testimonial, written by an unknown individual is also included. Dated October 7, 1828, this testimonial certifies Turner "competent, in our opinion, to effect the conveyance of mail, agreeably to his proposal, our route No. 550."
