Andrew Jackson Downing was a designer, horticulturist, and author. His publication on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening as well as collaborative essays with Alexander Jackson Davis in his magazine, The Horticulturist, made landscape gardenting popular among the middle and upper classes in the United States. Like Frederick Law Olmsted, Downing was a proponent of public green spaces where the population could enjoy nature.
Mr. Downing formed personal and career relationships with architects Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. Downings writings influenced landscape gardening and landscape architecture.
