Description

Bound green photographic album with gold lettering and details. Spine and cover both show title. Spine with raised bands also shows year, 1892, and volume number XVII [seventeen]. Endpapers are marbelized. Album contains 12 black-and-white photographic prints. The photographs depict girls in cooking classes. Some photographs also depict women teachers. Girls are dressed in cooking clothes including bonnets, aprons, and arm sleeves. Photographs show girls behind tables making food. Photographs show interior furnished classrooms that include bulletin boards, desks, chairs, tables, gas lighting, cooking tools, and wood stoves. Typed list glued to fly leaf shows this is volume XVII [seventeen] and describes each plate. Inventory of plates include: "Tennyson Street, (Miss Hope)"; "Old High School Building, Kenilworth Street, Roxbury, (Miss Somes)"; "Henry L. Peirce District," [two views]; "Bowditch District, Jamaica Plain"; "Harris District, Dorchester"; "Lyman District, East Boston"; "Everett District"; Old High School Building, Kenilworth Street, Roxbury" [two views]; "School Kitchen, Lyman District"; and "Cooking Exhibit, Wintrop School". Handwritten notations in pencil are present on some pages and also on the verso of some pages. Stamps on the verso of some pages show "A.H. Folsom, Photographer, 48 Alleghany St., Roxbury. Also Order Box 34 Brimfield St., Boston.". The first photograph in the album shows "A.H. Folsom, Photo" "48 Allegheny St., Boston." Stamp on the verso of front end paper shows the words "Boston School Dept., 15 Beacon St., Boston 8, Mass.". Also inserted at the back of the album, is a handwritten note in pen dated January of 1977, not specifically related to this album.
