The 1772 Foundation and Maine Preservation help fund restoration work at Castle Tucker

Thanks to a $7,500 matching grant from The 1772 Foundation and Maine Preservation, Historic New England completed a window restoration project at Castle Tucker in Wiscasset, Maine.

The project involved the restoration of nine windows on the front facade of Castle Tucker. The work also improved the overall appearance of the building and increased energy efficiency.

The window restoration process

• Historic New England awarded the contract to Bagala Window Works of Westbrook, Maine.
• We labeled and removed the nine windows for restoration at the contractor’s shop.
• Bagala Window Works removed the sash panes and all the glazing for repair and cleaned the paint from the window hardware.
• Much of the window glass was repaired using epoxy. New antique glass that matched existing glass was installed where repairs were not possible.
• Bagala Window Works reinstalled and glazed the glass and repainted the windows. They also installed spring copper weather stripping around the sash to ensure a weather-tight fit.
• We reinstalled the windows this spring.

Maine Preservation and The 1772 Foundation worked in partnership to award one-for-one matching grants for maintaining historic buildings in Maine.
