c. 1930s, undated
GUSN-363267
This collection consists of ten design renderings created by lighting company Edward F. Caldwell & Co. Made in colored pencil on tissue paper and mounted on cardboard, the drawings display perspectives of bracketed and hanging lanterns. Each drawing is labelled "scale ¼ of full size" and includes a design number. The bottom of each mounted board is embossed with a statement declaring the design to be a work of E.F. Caldwell & Co. and asserting the firms right to own and manufacture said design. While the drawings are undated, their design numbers place them circa the 1930s based on research conducted at other institutions that hold E. F. Caldwell & Co. drawings with surrounding design numbers.

Founded in 1895 by Edward F. Caldwell (1851-1914) and Victor F. von Lossberg (1853-1942), New York City-based firm Edward F. Caldwell & Co. was one of the leading designers and producers of electric light fixtures and decorative metalwork in the United States for more than 50 years. The companys portfolio included custom manufactured metal gates, lanterns, chandeliers, ceiling and wall fixtures, floor and table lamps, and other ornamental pieces. The firm undertook many commissions from prominent architects of the day, including McKim, Mead & White, Carrère & Hastings, Cram, Goodhue, and Ferguson, and Cass Gilbert. Work by Edward F. Caldwell & Co. can be found in the Andrew Carnegie Mansion, New York (1900-1902), the Flatiron Building (1900-1902), the White House (1902 renovations), Saint Patricks Cathedral, New York (1903), the New York Public Library (1908), Reynolda House, Winston-Salem, NC (1912-1917), the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (1931), Radio City Music Hall (1932), and Rockefeller Center (1932) among many others. Edward F. Caldwell & Co. closed in 1959 due to financial struggles.
