Description

This collection contains architectural drawings by Charles K. B. Nevin and Edward T. Sanderson, who both practiced in the early twentieth century in New England. The relationship between Nevin and Sanderson is unclear, as they were contemporaries but never worked in the same architectural firm. The collection includes approximately 650 architectural drawings designed by Nevin, arranged by client name in alphabetical order. The projects are mostly residential, as he designed homes in Williamstown, Newton, and Brookline, Massachusetts, and other towns throughout New England. Nevin also designed a few commercial and industrial properties, most notably the Industrial School for Boys in Shirley, Massachusetts, and storefronts in New York, New York, and Boston, Massachusetts. Also included are properties on the campus of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The drawings are ink on starch coded linen and are identified with a unique but undiscernible project number.

The collection also includes the architectural drawings of Edward T. Sanderson, who designed residential and commercial buildings in New England. Projects are located primarily in Massachusetts, including Holliston, Wellesley, Natick, Dover, Sherborn, and Weston, Massachusetts. Other locations include Hancock, New Hampshire, and Quebec, Canada, as well as a number of unidentified locations. Approximately 350 architectural drawings designed by Sanderson are included, arranged by client in alphabetical order. Sanderson’s drawings include a variety of materials such as blueprints and pencil on trace paper. The drawings are numbered with a unique project number. Additionally, there are a few pieces of ephemera, including correspondence, photographs, and product catalogs, relating to Sanderson and his architectural projects.

Historical/Biographical Note

Historical/Biographical Note

Charles Kirkland Barker Nevin was born on July 19, 1874, in Detroit, Michigan, to Basilisse Ada Savignac and David Nevin. His father, David, died the year he was born, and his mother married Frederick Hammond in 1879. Nevin moved from Michigan to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated in 1896 and started working for Charles L. Allen, an architect in Boston, Massachusetts. Nevin began working for himself around the turn of the century, designing private homes throughout New England. He also designed multiple buildings for the Industrial School for Boys in Shirley, Massachusetts, and various storefronts in both New York, New York, and Boston. He married Mary Elizabeth Saltonstall, and the two settled in Brookline, Massachusetts. They had a son, Kirkland Saltonstall Nevin (1910-1927). From 1920 to 1924, Nevin worked for the architectural firm Peare, Quiner, Nevin & Chickering. Their studio was located on 6 Beacon Street in Boston. They designed private homes throughout New England, as well as a few industrial buildings. Nevin returned to independent work after 1924 and continued designing until about 1930. Nevin and Mary lived briefly in New York in the 1930s and then returned in Massachusetts to live in Newton, Massachusetts. Nevin died in Newton on January 10, 1943.

Edward Thornton Sanderson was born on May 8, 1875, to Helen M. Noyes and Edward Sanderson. His father, Edward, died just several months after his birth. Sanderson opened his first architectural office in Littleton, New Hampshire, in 1895. While working in Littleton, Sanderson designed the Academy Building in Haverhill, New Hampshire, in 1896. Sanderson married Caroline Elizabeth Page on June 29, 1898. The same year, they moved to Massachusetts, where Sanderson continued to practice architecture. Edward and Caroline had a daughter, Helen, in 1903, and a son, Page, in 1904. After briefly living in Pennsylvania, the family settled in the greater Boston area. Sanderson continued designing into the 1950s, mostly focusing on local residential projects. His wife, Caroline, died on August 6, 1956 and Sanderson retired to Coral Gables, Florida. He passed died on July 16, 196
