Description

Collection contains fourteen mounted photographic prints, twenty-three postcards, and three unmounted photographic prints. Materials depict parades in towns across New England. Towns pictured in the collection are: Littleton, New Hampshire; Dover, New Hampshire; Madbury, New Hampshire; Hartford, Connecticut; Franklin, New Hampshire; Marblehead, Massachusetts; Worcester, Massachusetts; Kingfield, Maine; Jaffrey, New Hampshire; Newington, New Hampshire; Framingham, Massachusetts; Hillsboro, New Hampshire; Concord, New Hampshire; Schenectady, New York; Winthrop, Massachusetts; Weston, Vermont; and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, among others. The vast majority of the collection is undated; a portion of materials are dated 1865-1936 and undated.

Floats, views of towns and townspeople, costumes, and other ephemera used to celebrate parades are pictured. Notable parades include the Sesquicentennial parade in Jaffrey, New Hampshire; a Fourth of July parade where the Liberty Bell was displayed on a float; and the Hudson-Fulton Celebration. A common theme in the parades is patriotism, most notably seen through representation of the American flag and its colors.
