Deacon John Stone was a successful merchant, a third-generation distiller, and a leader in Salem's Unitarian First Church. It's his distillery that is demonized in Rev. George Barrell Cheever's 1831 story "Deacon Giles' Distillery" that resulted in Cheever's imprisonment. He owned a high chest in Historic New England's collections, 1998.5846. A portrait of his nemisis, the Reverend George Barrell Cheever is also in the collection, 2017.42.1.
