Historical/Biographical Note

Andrew Johnson, 17th President of the United States, was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 24, 1868. The articles of impeachment alleged that Johnson had violated the Tenure of Office Act and therefore the U.S. Constitution. Johnson's impeachment trial in the Senate lasted from March 5 to May 16, 1868, when he was acquitted.
