This business card advertises the services of J. C. Spooner's Photographic and Ambrotype Picture Palace located on Foot's Block in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Photographic and Ambrotype Picture Palace had previously been owned by photographer Otis H. Cooley until its purchase by the Spooner Brothers. The card measures 2 3/8 x 4 7/8 inches and is dated circa 1860.
On the verso of the image, the following excerpt from the "Springfield Republican," a newspaper located in Springfield, Massachusetts, is typed: "Photographs and Ambrotypes for Mr. J. C. Spooner. / The senior of the famous film of Spooner Brothers, in the Daguerreotype, / Ambrotype, and Photograph business, remains at the told and long-time picture- / making headquarters in Foot's building, and through improved instruments, / enlarged sky-light, and every other desirable accessory, is better enabled than / ever to maintain the high reputation always belonging to that establishment. / His business is very large and constantly improving; and a visit to his exhibi- / tion rooms will illustrate the rapidly advancing character of the art, under his / tasteful skill and generous enterprise. Some very beautiful large size Photo- / graphs and Ambrotypes both plain and colored, of well-known citizens, have / lately been taken, and speak for themselves, through faithfulness of portrait / and improved delicacy of finish, in testimony to the high standard of excel- / lence which has been reached at this establishment. The new large Camera / and improved light of Mr. Spooner, bring out the finer tints of all objects sub- / mitted to them, as was never before done in Springfield; and already the / public has discovered the improvement, and testified of it by an increase of pat- / ronage. A visit to Mr. Spooner's rooms, always interesting, was never more / so than now; and the present-giving holidays are near at hand, when many of / us will be moved to go tither, for a special and practical purpose."

Otis H. Cooley was a dagueorreotype photographer operating in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the 19th century. He produced portraits of American poet Emily Dickinson and her sister Lavinia Norcross Dickinson during his years of operation. He was born in 1820 and died in 1860. The Spooner brothers took over Cooley's business sometime between 1855 and 1860 with J. C. Spooner, who is believed to have worked under Cooley, becoming the namesake. J. C. Spooner's Photographic and Ambrotype Picture Palace served as the photographer for a large number of individuals in Springfield and other locations in Massachusetts.
