The receipt is for a subscription to the "Rutland herald" during the Vermont legislative session in 1876. The receipt appears to be made out to "J.C. Coolidge" who was John Calvin Collidge, a member of the Vermont House of Representatives, 1872-1878. Coolidge was the father of United States President Calvin Coolidge. A figure resembling the Statue of Freedom on the U.S. Capitol building is shown in the illustration.
