Roseland Cottage

Off the walls

Start exploring by looking at the section on interior preservation work and the team of conservators who worked to restore and repair the dramatic Lincrusta-Walton wallcoverings.

The Bowen family installed the Lincrusta-Walton at Roseland Cottage in the mid-1880s. This newly fashionable wallcovering imitated richly tooled and gilded leather. The wallcovering was installed in the stair hall, both parlors, and the dining room, the principal entertaining rooms of the house. Today, Roseland Cottage is one of the few places where visitors can see Lincrusta in an original setting and with original surface coverings.

There is more to explore

The Roseland Cottage web app is just one of Historic New England’s new online visitor experiences. With new research and never-before-seen videos and photographs, these buildings, landscapes, objects, and stories are more accessible than ever before.
