Marriage certificate for Augustus Howley and Rebecca Williams, dated November 11, 1876. They were married by the Reverend Carter Wright of the African Methodist Episcopal Church of Portland, Maine; the witnesses to the ceremony were Thomas Bailey and Mary Jackson. Surrounding the text of the certificate is a frame of flowers, tassels, birds, and a Bible, as well as an image of a man and a woman in a boat.

Augustus Howley (alternatively spelled Hawley and Holley) was a Black man born in Spanish Cuba circa 1845. By 1870 he was living in Portland, Maine working as a cooper, and then as a general laborer and teamster. Rebecca Williams, also Black, was born in Canada.
