Historical/Biographical Note

Historical/Biographical Note

Sarah Eliza Sigourney Cushing was born in 1832 to Thomas Parkman Cushing (1787-1854) and Martha Ann (Cargill) Sigourney of Boston, Mass. Sarah Eliza was the eldest of three surviving daughters; one brother died in infancy. In 1854, she married Edward Tuckerman IV (1817-1886), who became a botany professor at Amherst College. Sarah Eliza and Edward did not have children of their own, but raised their four nephews following the early death of Sarah's sister, Martha Ann (Cushing) Esty. Sarah herself passed away at age 83 in 1915.
