Undated portrait of Martha Ann (Cushing) Esty (1837-1887). Placed in dark wood and gold-painted frame, the portrait shows a young woman from the shoulders up with curly brown hair and dark eyes. Portions of the photograph have been hand colored. The reverse of the frame lists the framer, Hendrickson, Doll & Richards of 28 Summer Street, Boston, Mass.

Martha Ann Cushing was born in 1837 to Thomas Parkman Cushing (1787-1854) and Martha Ann (Cargill) Sigourney of Boston, Mass. Martha Ann was the youngest of three surviving daughters; one brother died in infancy. In 1867, she married William Cole Esty (1838-1916), a professor at Amherst College. Martha Ann and William had four sons together before her death of peritonitis in 1887.
