The J. R. Watkins Company was founded in Plainview, Minnesota, by J. R. Watkins in 1868. Watkins first began selling liniment door-to-door. They eventually moved their headquarters to Winona, Minnesota. The company hired more door-to-door salesman across the United States of America. By the 1940s, Watkins was the largest direct-sales company in the world. Their success began to wane in the aftermath of World War II. Today, the company is selling products under the name Watkins Incorporated.
