Portions of the photograph have been hand colored. The reverse of the frame lists the framer, Hendrickson, Doll & Richards of 28 Summer Street, Boston, Mass.

Martha Ann Cushing was born in 1837 to Thomas Parkman Cushing (1787-1854) and Martha Ann (Cargill) Sigourney of Boston, Mass. Martha Ann was the youngest of three surviving daughters; one brother died in infancy. In 1867, she married William Cole Esty (1838-1916), a professor at Amherst College. Martha Ann and William had four sons together before her death of peritonitis in 1887.
