Elm Building, 63-65 Hanover Street

Description

This image was taken in 1939 by photographer John F. Lane for the City of Boston Assessing Department. Located near the corner of Hanover and Elm Streets, the Elm Building housed multiple businesses, including printers, manufacturers, a musical instrument shop, a tavern, and a drugstore, as seen in this photograph.

This building was demolished to make way for Boston City Hall Plaza in the 1960s.

The Elm Building, located at 63-65 Hanover Street (near the corner of Elm Street), was originally constructed in the late 19th century and served as a commercial and industrial building. Alongside large portions of Scollay Square, Brattle Square, and Adams Square, the building was demolished to make way for the new Government Center development in the 1960s.
