Fifty cent half-ticket, no. 41451, for the Original Louisiana Lottery Co. (the Louisiana State Lottery Company). This ticket was guaranteed by bankers in Kansas City, Kansas and the drawings for this edition of the lottery were held on November 14, 1893 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The front of the ticket bears an image of Justice blindfolded holding her scales, while another classical Greco-Roman women pours money out of a cornucopia to a crowd of waiting men.

Louisiana State Lottery Company

The Louisiana State Lottery Company was chartered in New Orleans in 1868 and for several decades held a monopoly on lotteries in the United States. Lotteries were viewed with suspicion by the general public due to their connotations with gambling. The company was repeatedly accused of bribery and fraud and was investigated for violating vice and morality laws before being shut down in 1895. It then relocated to Honduras and operated illegally until 1906.
