"Chair of Walnut"

Description

Design drawing titled "Chair of Walnut" on paper and affixed to cardboard. Front view is rendered in watercolor and pencil; side view is in pencil only. William and Mary-style armchair has elaborately carved crest rail with swags, tassels, and a coat of arms; back which cants back with caned splat and molded stiles that flare at top; scalloped lower back rail; upholstered slip seat; molded arms with scrolled handholds; carved and turned trumpet-rectangle-trumpet-rectangle arm supports and legs; carved and scrolled front stretcher; turned side stretchers; and Spanish feet. Title and scale are handwritten on drawing; "255" is stamped at lower edge of cardboard. Embossed on lower left corner of drawing is: "Return to / A. H. Davenport Co. / 96 Washington St. / Boston, Mass."
